WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) _ Seven people have been pulled from the rough surf off Watch Hill.
Westerly Ambulance Corps Chief Bethany Gingerella says four adults got into trouble Tuesday afternoon after going in to aid three children who were struggling in breaking waves and a rip current near the wall of East Beach.
She says the area is public, but not patrolled by lifeguards.
She says lifeguards from the neighboring Ocean House resort jumped in to help the swimmers, who were in danger of drowning.
Crews from Westerly and Charlestown, Coast Guard and the state Department of Environmental Management assisted in the rescue effort.
All seven swimmers were treated at Westerly Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
