PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Businessman Lorne Adrain says he's dropping out of Providence's mayoral race, saying the field of candidates posed a substantial risk to progress: an apparent reference to the entry into the race of former mayor and two-time convicted felon Buddy Cianci.

He said Monday it was a tough decision but that it "gives us all the greatest opportunity to move Providence forward."

Adrain first entered the race as a Democrat, but filed to run as an independent. He would have been pitted against Cianci, also an independent, Republican Dan Harrop and the eventual winner of the Democratic primary.

That meant the winner could have won with a small percentage of the electorate.

The race will still be a three-way race, but the winner will need more votes.
