WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) _ Westerly has banned asphalt plants in response to a plan for a 300-ton-per hour plant.
The Town Council vote on Monday followed more than four months of discussion about plans by the Cherenzia Companies for an asphalt plant. However, faced with opposition, the company announced in June it would not build the plant.
The Westerly Sun reports that the company had obtained air quality permits for the proposed plant from the state Department of Environmental Management but had not submitted plans to the town.
Opponents said the plant would harm an aquifer and public water wells less than a mile away.
Residents continued to lobby on Monday against the proposed plant and asphalt plants inand asphalt plants in general.
