WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) — Four canoeists who set out to travel by canoe across Rhode Island say they've finished their trek and are celebrating in Westerly.
Paddle Across Rhode Island announced the successful end to the inland trip on its Facebook page Sunday.
The four men began July 6, averaging 12.5 miles a day for a total of about 100 miles.
The trip began in North Smithfield and crossed through 17 of the state's 39 cities and towns.
Chuck Horbert of the non-profit group Rhode Island Blueways Alliance planned to lead a 106-mile trip last summer to highlight the efforts that have improved water quality and access since the passage of the national Clean Water Act in 1970.
The group was forced to abandon the effort due to high water caused by a tropical storm.
