Chemistry Camp for Girls Set to Start at URI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ A five-day chemistry camp for middle school girls is about to get underway at the University of Rhode Island.

Forty girls are expected to attend beginning Monday. URI Assistant Chemistry Professor Mindy Levine says she wants girls to come out of the camp thinking science is cool and women can become scientists.

One topic of study will be the chemistry of explosives. The girls will make sparklers using common lab chemicals and see how to explode gummy bears with potassium chlorate.

Research shows girls start to lose interest in science during middle school or earlier.

The camp is being funded for two years with a $15,000 grant from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Special Grant Program in the Chemical Sciences.
