CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) _ Cranston Mayor Allan Fung has raised close to $110,000 for a potential gubernatorial run.
Carlos Lopez, the Republican mayor's chief of staff, tells the Providence Journal the money came from online requests, small parties and other events, including a Cranston Country Club fundraiser last month.
He says the mayor will use the money to fund Fung's political operation and to help Republican City Council candidates.
Fung has said he's strongly considering a run for governor. He said that he believes the race will focus more on leadership than on partisan politics, but says he might be helped by Gov. Lincoln Chafee's recent switch to the Democratic Party.
