PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The three leading Democrats running for Rhode Island governor sparred in their first televised debate, trying to draw distinctions among themselves despite widespread agreement on major issues.

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, Treasurer Gina Raimondo and former Obama administration official Clay Pell took part in a live hour-long debate Tuesday evening at the Providence Performing Arts Center.

Raimondo called herself a leader who can get things done, citing the 2011 public pension system overhaul. Taveras stressed his work turning around Providence's shaky finances and pledged to "bring back hope" in the economically struggling state.

Pell stressed the fact that he is not a politician and said the state needs "solutions-oriented" leadership.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee, a Democrat, is not seeking re-election.

The primary is in September.
