PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Extreme cold was expected to be at least as much of a problem for Rhode Islanders than snow as the first winter storm of 2014 pounded the Northeast.

The National Weather Service said snow totals were expected to be between 6 inches and 10 inches, far less than the nearly 2 feet in parts of Massachusetts.

Temperatures are expected to be as low as 5 degrees to 15 degrees. From Friday night into Saturday morning, temperatures are expected to fall to a range of between 5 below zero and 5 above.

The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency advised Rhode Islanders to take precautions to cope with the bitter cold. The agency says elderly friends, family and neighbors should be checked on frequently.

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority is detouring seven bus routes.
