PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Gov. Lincoln Chafee was submerged for two days aboard a nuclear submarine off the coast of New England.
It was reported Thursday Chafee was on the Groton, Connecticut-based USS Missouri last week.
Chafee spokeswoman Faye Zuckerman told the Associated Press the office could reach Chafee if necessary. When asked if the lieutenant governor took over his duties, Zuckerman said no, Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts was available to help.
Navy spokesman Lt. Timothy Hawkins said the submarine's crew was excited to host the governor of a state that helps build submarines. The manufacturing plant for submarine maker Electric Boat is in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.
Hawkins said the submarine conducted routine training while Chafee and the state director of business regulation, Paul McGreevy, were on board.
The submarine returned to Connecticut Thursday.
