JOHNSTON, R.I. (AP) — North Providence police have charged a Johnston fire captain with a felony drug offense, saying he carried contraband in his personal vehicle.

The Providence Journal reports that Col. Paul Martellini says police found five pills of Suboxone in the vehicle and suspected drug paraphernalia in a firefighter's duty bag after they stopped Fire Capt. Richard A. Turchetti for driving an unregistered Jeep on Sept. 11.

Police say Turchetti was unlawfully carrying the Suboxone pills.

Martellini said the police noticed Turchetti's unoccupied vehicle in a neighborhood under surveillance on reports of illegal narcotics.

Turchetti was arraigned and released on personal recognizance.

A woman who answered the phone at Turchetti's residence Friday morning said he was not home.

Johnston's fire chief says Turchetti has not been suspended and is on sick leave.
