PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island is set to participate in the nation's largest single-day food drive with the collection by letter carriers of canned goods and other items that will serve needy families.

The ``Stamp Out Hunger'' food drive is taking place all across the state on Saturday. Items are being collected for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

Residents wishing to participate are asked to leave a bag of non-perishable goods near their mailbox Saturday morning. The pickups may occur earlier than normal mail delivery.

The food bank will later distribute the goods.

The food bank says letter carriers collected 117,000 pounds of food in Rhode Island last year.

The food drive is a joint effort of the U.S. Postal Service and the National Association of Letter Carriers.
