PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Providence man has been acquitted of murder and conspiracy charges in the shooting death of a 12-year-old girl, but convicted of lesser charges.
Luis "Fat Boy" Gonzalez, was found not guilty by a jury Tuesday of the most serious charges in the killing of Aynis Vargas last year.
He was found guilty of eight lesser charges, including felony assault and weapons charges.
Prosecutors say Gonzalez and four others were seeking revenge for the killing of a friend and randomly targeted a graduation party Vargas was attending. The other four pleaded guilty.
Three women were also shot, but survived.
Gonzalez acknowledged he was there, but testified he couldn't move fast enough to prevent 22-year-old Branden Castro from firing into the crowd. He weighed 570 pounds at the time.
