The Newport City Council is joining officials in Middletown and Jamestown in calling for the state to install a median barrier on the Pell Bridge to prevent head-on accidents.
The Newport Daily News reports the council approved a resolution Wednesday urging the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority to install a barrier. Middletown passed a similar resolution Monday and Jamestown approved one in November.
Officials cited several fatal head-on crashes on the bridge, including one that killed a 75-year-old man last month.
The Turnpike and Bridge Authority agreed last month to study whether a middle barrier is needed. The study is expected to take two months. Officials say a barrier couldn't be installed until after a painting and steel repair project that is months away from completion.
