PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Newport city councilman has pleaded no contest to assaulting a contractor over a ladder.

State Police say Councilman Michael Farley was arrested Wednesday on a simple assault charge for allegedly assaulting a contractor who was working at his neighbor's home in June.

The altercation occurred after Farley accused 41-year-old Kevin Schiavone of stealing a ladder from his property. Schiavone said he thought the ladder belonged to his client.

Farley pleaded no contest at his arraignment in district court, according to the court.

The conviction will be dropped if Farley stays out of trouble for one year. He was ordered to pay restitution to Schiavone for medical expenses and have no contact with him.

Newport police turned over the investigation to state police to avoid the appearance of any favoritism.
