Newport Man Begins Installing Home Wind Turbine

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — A Newport resident who has been battling for years to install a wind turbine on his property that is connected to the power grid is beginning the installation process.

The Newport Daily News reports the cork-screw shaped turbine has been delivered to John McNulty and a crane will soon lower it through the roof and into his home on Eastnor Road.

McNulty last year settled years of litigation with the city over the project and has all the permits for the project.

The City Council enacted a wind turbine ordinance in December 2012 that allows homeowners with at least 10,000-square-foot lots outside the city's historic districts to install one wind turbine that can generate 10 kilowatts.

McNulty says his turbine could handle winds of up to 180 mph.
