NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — A neighborhood association in Newport is deciding whether to appeal a decision by zoning officials to approve the construction of a welcome center on the grounds of the Gilded Age mansion The Breakers.
The Preservation Society of Newport County wants to build the center on the 13-acre grounds of the national historic landmark. The neighbors' group and others say it shouldn't be built on the estate but rather in a parking lot across the street or elsewhere so the grounds aren't disturbed.
The zoning board of review on Monday overturned an earlier decision by the Historic District Commission that denied approval for the project.
Robert Beaver of the neighbors group says on Tuesday they are considering an appeal.
The project needs additional zoning approval before it can be built.
