PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ the Providence school system has scheduled its opening convocation for the new school year for teachers, administrators and all other school employees.

The convocation is being held at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Monday morning.

Superintendent Susan Lusi plans to present the district's new strategic plan and priorities. Officials say the aim is a system that better serves students through improvements in decision-making and accountability, including greater autonomy for schools.

The event will feature a keynote address by Ed Cooley, the head men's basketball coach at Providence College and a Central High School alumnus.

Mayor Angel Taveras, School Board President Keith Oliveira and Providence Teachers Union President Steve Smith are expected to attend.
