PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A member of the Chafee administration is stepping down as director of the Division of Elderly Affairs to run for lieutenant governor as a Republican.

Catherine Taylor made the announcement Tuesday. She says her resignation is effective June 20. She is the only Republican running.

Taylor ran for secretary of state in 2010, narrowly losing to Democratic incumbent Ralph Mollis.

Mollis is now running for lieutenant governor against Cumberland Mayor Dan McKee and state Rep. Frank Ferri. They will face off in the September Democratic primary.

Taylor says she looks forward to sharing her ideas about how the office should contribute to the economic vitality of Rhode Island.

She was appointed by then-independent Gov. Lincoln Chafee to head the Division of Elderly Affairs in 2011. Chafee is now a Democrat.
