PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — More and more historic documents, records and odds and ends are now available for online viewing thanks to Rhode Island's State Archives.

The new online archive went live last month and features dozens of historic records, letters and photographs.

Included in the collection are letters from Thomas Jefferson, photographs from the Hurricane of 1938 and a telegram from President Abraham Lincoln requesting 50,000 troops to fight in the Civil War.

The online database is intended to make it easier for historians, teachers, students, genealogists and history buffs to find primary source material. The records date back to 1638.
