PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island's Statehouse dome will be illuminated in patriotic red, white and blue to salute the nation and honor its veterans.

The dome will be lit starting Thursday evening and through July 9. The lighting is meant to recognize veterans for their sacrifices.

The governor's office says Chief Master Sgt. John P. Gallo, president of the Rhode Island House Veterans Affairs Advisory Council, requested the lighting on Tuesday. Two state lawmakers will pay for it.

The dome is lit a variety of colors throughout the year in honor of different causes, including green for healthy eating, blue for autism and pink for breast cancer.
