PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Democratic political consultant Brett Smiley has entered the race to succeed Angel Taveras as mayor of Providence.

Smiley formally announced his campaign Tuesday at the Mount Hope Neighborhood Association office.

Smiley is the former chairman of Providence's Water Supply Board. He runs a political consulting firm that focuses on fundraising compliance and has worked as the city's lobbyist in the Statehouse. He also worked on still-unsuccessful attempts to tighten restrictions on payday lenders.

Smiley lives on the city's East Side. He says he's a progressive candidate that will pursue practical strategies to improve schools and the city's economy.

Other Democrats in the race include City Council President Michael Solomon and former Housing Court Judge Jorge Elorza. Psychiatrist Daniel Harrop is running as a Republican.
