US Census: RI poverty rate highest in New England

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The U.S. Census Bureau says Rhode Island has the highest poverty rate and percentage of residents without health insurance in New England.

The agency's Current Population Survey, released on Tuesday, also says Rhode Island led the region with the highest increase in median household income from 2011 to 2012. The Providence Journal reports that in all three measures, Rhode Island was better off than the national average.

Data show Rhode Island's median household income climbed to $56,065 last year, up 14.3 percent from 2011.

Leonard Lardaro, an economics professor at the University of Rhode Island, says it shows how Rhode Island was hit hard by the recession and is coming back.

The poverty rate was 13.6 percent, slightly higher than in second-place Maine, at 12.8 percent. The national average is 15 percent.
