WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) — Westerly has withdrawn one of three cease and desist orders in a dispute with a quarry company as the two sides seek a settlement.
The Westerly Sun reports that the town withdrew a case against Copar Quarries of Westerly and Westerly Granite Co. and agreed to not pursue most of the other claims of wrongdoing in the other two orders.
Court filings also indicate that lawyers for the two companies offered to settle and that the town's lawyer discussed the proposed settlement with the Town Council at an executive session Tuesday. Terms of the proposed settlement are unclear.
The town has withdrawn all claims that Copar allowed stone dust to migrate off the quarry property and into the surrounding neighborhood. It also dropped assertions the company causes excessive noise.
