Bears Emerging from Hibernation in Rhode Island

It's bear-sighting season in RI. The once rare sight of a bear digging through a trash bin or taking down a bird feeder is now common in Southern New England.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is reminding Ocean State residents to remove backyard food sources that attract black bears as they emerge from hibernation. The DEM says until their natural food sources become more available in the spring, black bears may visit bird feeders, beehives, chicken coops, rabbit hutches and compost piles. Electric fencing is advised. If a black bear is spotted on private property, people are being told to report the sighting to the DEM by calling 401-222-3070.
