Memorial Day Weekend is usually the start of the summer travel season, and while that certainly wasn’t the case last year, it looks like a lot of people are ready for its return this year.
A new AAA poll finds:
- Memorial Day weekend travel is expected to rebound this year.
- 37 million people say they’ll be traveling 50 or more miles from home between May 27thand May 31st.
- That’s an increase of 60% over last year, when, due to the pandemic, only 23 million people traveled.
- The number is still about 13%, or close to 16 million travelers, fewer than Memorial Day weekend 2019.
- As for how folks are getting to their vacation destination:
- 34 million people will be hitting the road, with road trips increasing 52% from last year, but is still 9% less than 219.
- Close to 2.5 million plan to fly to their destination, almost six times more than last year, but still 750,000 fewer than 2019.
- Only about 237,000 will take a bus or train, the second lowest amount on record, with last year being the absolute lowest, at 185,000.
- As for where everyone is going, AAA says Las Vegas and Orlando are the top destinations based on AAA Travel bookings and TripTik road trip searches.
