Tape Reveals John Lennon Suggested Replacing George Harrison With Clapton

Eric Clapton could’ve been one of The Beatles. A newly unearthed tape from the band’s “Let It Be” sessions reportedly reveals John Lennon suggested replacing George Harrison with Eric.

The audio clip allegedly features John talking to Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr about George’s temporary exit from the band in January 1969. At the time, George felt like his contributions were being overshadowed, and left the Beatles to visit his mother in Liverpool. He ended up returning six days later. While John empathized, it looks like he was already thinking about a potential replacement.

“We allowed it to go deeper and we didn’t even give him any bandages,’ he reportedly says on the tape. “I think if George doesn’t come back by [next week] we ask Eric Clapton to play.” Source:Daily Mail photo: Getty Images
