Five New Rhode Island License Plate Designs Revealed!

Yesterday five new Rhode Island license plate designs were revealed at the Statehouse by Governor Dan McKee. The five finalists were chosen from over 900 submissions in a license plate design contest, and now the voting begins. In two weeks, the winning plate will be announced and that will replace the current “wave” plate which has been in use since 1996.

One plate is very similar to the current plate, but there are more waves and they are smaller. Two plates feature the Newport Bridge, one with a sailboat and one with a lighthouse. The other two have a band of yellow at the top with an anchor on the left and either waves or water at the bottom. Rather than raised letters and numbers the new plate will be flat and more reflective that those in the past.

At the unveiling McKee said, “Rhode Island has evolved in many great ways, and it is time for our license plate to reflect that.”

Once a design is chosen it will take about three to four months for them to start being sent out to residents. The state Division of Motor Vehicles expects the entire replacement process to take approximately two years to complete.
