Sesame Workshop Introduces New Muppet to Help Kids Thru Crisis

Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind “Sesame Street,” are always striving to make all children feel included, and they are doing that again with the introduction of a brand new Muppet.

The new additions name is Ameera, an 8-year-old girl, was created to support children and families affected by crisis and displacement. She uses a purple wheelchair or forearm crutches, due to a spinal injury, and is described as having “great sense of humor,” which “serves her well as a natural leader who encourages others with her bright personality.” She also has "a passion for science and basketball."

"At a time when more children than ever before are affected by conflict and displacement,"According to Sherrie Westin President of Sesame Workshop, shares, "Ameera also highlights the urgent need for creative and flexible approaches to delivering playful learning and early education to communities affected by crisis." 

Ameera is set to make her debut in season five of “Ahlan Simsim," ("Welcome Sesame" in Arabic)the local version of “Sesame Street” in the Middle East and North Africa. She will also will be a part of new "Watch, Play, Learn" animated videos for children ages three to eight, dealing with topics like social-emotional learning; math; science; child protection, health, and safety.
