Lots of teens will be headed off to college in the coming weeks, and while they may learn a lot in their classes, most people agree college is about way more than what’s taught in the classrooms.
A new poll finds:
- 73% of adults agree that college teaches students life lessons beyond the classroom.
- Most agree that the hardest part of college is doing well and getting good grades (45%), but other challenges include:
- Having more responsibility (44%)
- Living on your own (43%)
- 85% of those who attended college say it prepared them for adult life.
- Skills students picked up during college include:
- Organizational skills (53%)
- Discovering their passion (47%)
- Skills people learned in college that they still apply to adult life include:
- How to be independent.
- How to arrive when instructed
- How to approach people in the correct way.
- But 80% wish they could change parts of their college experience.
- In fact, 44% of those polled say they’d like to try college again because they didn’t learn enough vital life skills the first time around.
- Among the top reasons folks want to go to college now:
- Learn new skill sets (42%)
- Didn’t take advantage of learning life skills (40%)
- Changing my career path (39%)
- Interested in certain skills (38%)
- Lower cost/affordability (37%)
- Have extra time (37%)
- Want to meet new people (34%)
