60 years later, a rare, never-released recording has been unveiled of an early performance of The Beatles. The recording is reported to be from a live performance at British boarding school Stowe from April 4, 1963- before the band made their legendary “breakthrough.”
"The opportunity that this tape presents, which is completely out of the blue, is fantastic because we hear them just on the cusp of the breakthrough into complete world fame," said historian Mark Lewisohn. He acknowledged that not long after this all live Beatles recordings begin to become at least partially obscured by fans’ screams.
This is the “earliest known audio” to exist of the legendary British band. It is said to have been made by John Bloomfield, a student at Stowe. The performance happened because one student wrote to The Beatles’ manager then collected the requested £100 from students.
