New England lost a true sports legend on Sunday (10/01/23), when retired red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield passed away from brain cancer at the age of 57. Not only did Wake win two World Series with the Sox, but he was the team's third highest in all-time wins, behind only Cy Young and Roger Clemens. On Sunday Jason Varitek, a longtime teammate of Wakefield and now a Red Sox coach, spoke to NESN about his late friend.
