Elton John Celebrates 30 Years of Sobriety with Heartfelt Message

Elton John is celebrating 30 years of sobriety and shared a heartfelt message to fans on social media.

On Twitter, the music icon reflected on his 30th Sobriety Birthday, revealing flowers and cards that he received from his sons and husband David Furnish. He wrote, along with some photos of the gifts, "Reflecting on the most magical day having celebrated my 30th Sobriety Birthday. So many lovely cards, flowers and chips from my sons, David, friends in the Program, staff at the office and in our homes. I’m truly a blessed man."

He added in a followup tweet, "If I hadn’t finally taken the big step of asking for help 30 years ago, I’d be dead. Thank-you from the bottom of my heart to all the people who have inspired and supported me along the way."

Sir Elton John has been open and transparent about his struggles with addiction, and last year, he penned a candid article for Variety's Recovery Issue, and talked about getting sober in 1990, getting the help he needed, and returning to the stage. He shared:

"When you come out of treatment, it’s like being reborn. You are so stripped down and completely vulnerable. It’s like starting life over with a new rule book for living. I felt trepidation about how I would be able to do anything again. But you are taught in the Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotics Anonymous program to keep life in the moment, to live one day at a time and one moment at a time. If the universe meant for me to continue performing and creating new music, I knew it would happen when it was meant to happen. You learn to hand those things over to a power greater than yourself. You have to accept that you are no longer in charge of your life."
