Federal Judge Denies Early Release For Stolen Valor Inmate

There will be no early release for a woman serving time in a stolen valor case.

In 2023, Sarah Cavanaugh was sentenced to nearly six years in prison after falsely claiming to be a decorated Marine veteran with cancer to defraud charities and individuals of more than 250-thousand-dollars.

Cavanaugh asked for compassionate release from prison, alleging she had been sexually assaulted while serving time at a federal prison in Connecticut.

Federal prosecutors argued her claims did not not rise to the level of 'extraordinary and compelling' circumstances to justify her release.

On Monday, a judge agreed and the early release was denied.
