Another Rhode Island institution has closed its doors. Tommy's Pizza on Chalkstone Ave. in Providence has served its last pie after 66 years. Owner Tommy Sacco tells the Providence Journal that the family business had been losing money for the past nine years. The Cranston location on Oaklawn Ave. will remain open.
To the Sacco family...THANK YOU for all your hard work and wonderful food. While I admit I haven't been to the Tommy's on Chalkstone in a few years, it was a frequent spot for my friends and me, especially in our college years. When I went to RIC, Tommy's was the GO-TO pizza place for everyone I knew because it wasn't a long drive from campus. Later into adulthood, it was a great place to take people from out of town due to its great food and neighborhood-place charm.
My wife and I drove by the Chalkstone location just last week and agreed that we need to get back there soon. So much for that. This is a lesson for all of us...if you value and cherish a local business...make sure you support them NOW, because you never know when they'll be gone. And they probably need your business.
