HauerTo: Prepare for Summer Parenting Before the Kids Are Home Full-Time

We’re less than a month away from summer break… which means your kids are about to go from “gone most of the day” to “standing in the kitchen asking for snacks every 11 minutes.”

Summer is fun.

Summer is memory-making.

Summer is also 94 straight days of hearing “I’m bored.”

So now’s the time to prepare yourself mentally, emotionally, and snack-wise.

Hack #1: Build the “I’m Bored” List Now

Do not wait until the first official day of summer.

Right now, sit down and make a list of:

  • cheap outings
  • backyard games
  • rainy-day activities
  • screen-free ideas
  • places with air conditioning

Then when boredom hits, you can point to the list instead of improvising under pressure.

Hack #2: Stock the Summer Snack Zone

Summer parenting is basically part-time lifeguard, part-time snack distributor.

Create one easy-to-grab snack section:

  • popsicles
  • fruit
  • granola bars
  • pretzels
  • anything requiring minimal effort

The goal is survival, not Pinterest.

Hack #3: Lower Your Expectations Early

Not every day has to become a core memory.

Some days will be magical.

Some days everyone watches movies in pajamas until noon.

Both count.

Hack #4: Claim One Quiet Hour

This is critical.

Whether it’s reading time, independent play, or “everyone go somewhere else for 60 minutes,” establish a daily reset period now.

Summer parenting gets much easier when nobody is overstimulated by 2:14pm.

Hack #5: Schedule Fun Before Summer Gets Away From You

The best summer activities never happen accidentally.

If you want:

  • the beach trip
  • the zoo day
  • mini golf
  • movie night
  • camping
  • ice cream runs

Put them on the calendar now before summer somehow disappears in a blur of sunscreen and laundry.

The Bottom Line

Summer parenting doesn’t require perfection.

It just requires snacks, flexibility, and realistic expectations.

Prepare a little now, and future-you will be far less stressed when the house suddenly gets very loud all day long.
