Oh No, There's a Candy Cane Shortage!

For the last few years we’ve been dealing with all sorts of shortages thanks to supply chain issues. Now a Christmas staple is in short supply. This year there’s a candy cane shortage!

According to The New York Post, there is a “candy cane crisis” happening right now. Several stores say they can’t seem to get their hands on enough of the holiday treats to fill their shelves this Christmas.

Economy Candy in New York City said it's been dealing with a shortage of "all candy and chocolate products in recent months, including candy canes." Owner Mitchell Cohen said, "We only received half of our candy cane order for the holiday season and sold out almost immediately (we currently have zero in stock),"

The U.S. makes about 70 percent of the world’s supply of peppermint oil which of course is used to flavor the candy canes, and production has dropped by 25 percent over the last ten years. What’s causing this drop in production? Several things including a deadly fungal disease that is incurable. That, along with those dreaded supply chain issues, mean you might not find a candy cane in your stocking on Christmas morning. Read more about the shortage HERE.
