Nantucket Votes to Allow All People to Go Topless on Beaches

There once was a girl from Nantucket...who wanted to go topless at the beach. Well someday she might be allowed to do that, because at Tuesday’s annual town meeting, the Gender Equality on Beaches bylaw amendment passed 327-242.

Although amendment still needs final approval from the Massachusetts attorney general's office before it can go into effect, it moves the island one step closer to allowing all people to go topless on Nantucket beaches no matter what their gender may be.

At this time only men are allowed to take off their shirts in public, and Nantucket resident Dororthy Stover thought that was wrong, so she proposed the new bylaw. A portion of it reads, "In order to promote equality for all persons, any person shall be allowed to be topless on any public or private beach" in Nantucket.

In an interview with WBUR, Stover said she hopes to “normalize bodies of all shapes and sizes and foster an environment of acceptance.”
