The baby formula shortage here in the United States is so serious the government has involved the military to help. Dubbed Operation Fly Formula, the US Air Force has delivered its first shipment of baby formula from Germany.
One hundred and thirty-two pallets of Nestle prescription infant formula from Switzerland was driven by truck to Germany where it was loaded onto an Air Force C-17 cargo plane. The shipment of 78-thousand pounds of hypoallergenic formula should be enough to feed 9000 babies and 18000 toddlers with a cows milk protein allergy for one week.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack "It is a large shipment of very specific and specialized formula. Formula for moms and dads who have children who have allergies where the regular formula just simply will not work,"
The White House says the formula will be delivered to doctors, hospitals, pharmacies etc in areas of the nation "where the needs are most acute,” and they say we can expect more international formula shipments coming soon.
