I'm sure Tom Cruise is a happy man today, because “Top Gun: Maverick” made $156 million over the four-day holiday weekend and has raked in over $250 worldwide already. That makes this film Cruise’s first $100 million opening weekend!
The reviews are great, with a 96% ranking from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and a score of 99% from audiences. Not only do we have a 'need for speed', apparently we also have a need for more "Top Gun." There's already talk of a third film in the franchise! If it does happen, let's hope we don't have to wait as long for film number three as we did for the second one.
Maybe that’s just fans’ wishful thinking, because when asked about the possibility of another sequel, producer Jerry Bruckheimer says, “Let’s ride this wave.” Not super promising, but he didn't say no. And it should be noted that Bruckheimer is pretty busy right now working on National Treasure 4 and a fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie starring Eddie Murphy that he’s making for Netflix.
As for Tom Cruise, he’s still working on the next two Mission: Impossible movies so it may be a while before he’s ready to jump back in the cockpit.
