Do you recall that billion-dollar jackpot ($1.34-billion if you're being specific) Mega Millions jackpot that someone won this past July? It’s been claimed, but we may never know who won it. That's because the Illinois Lottery says the two winners – who are splitting the prize – "wish to remain anonymous." In Illinois, winners can remain anonymous if the prize is worth more than a quarter-million dollars.
"The prize was shared by two individuals, who agreed to split the prize if won – and they stayed true to that word," the Illinois Lottery says in a statement. "The winners wish to remain anonymous, and the Illinois Lottery is unable to share any information about the winners except to say that they must be absolutely 'over the moon' with their Mega Millions win."
The new multi-millionaires, who won the one-point-three-four-billion-dollar jackpot in late July after stopping at a store in the Chicago area, took the lump sum of $780-million. That works out to about $390-million apiece…and after taxes? That leaves around $246-million apiece. Pretty good return on a $3 investment I'd say!!
