If you ask a group of people what their least favorite word is, a lot of them will say moist. If you’re not one of them, that word probably doesn’t affect you any more than other harmless adjectives, but if you cringe when you hear the word moist, you’re not alone.
Moist is one of those words that people love to hate and some folks can’t hear it without making disgusting faces or dry heaving a little bit. But the thing is, there are a lot of words that sound much worse, including putrid, acrid, festering, phlegm, damp, and secrete. Next to those words, moist doesn’t sound so bad, does it?
And sometimes there’s just no other word that will do. How else are you supposed to describe a slice of cake that’s not dry? You can’t say your cake is damp or steamy, moist is the best word to describe it. So hate on moist all you want, but unless you want a clammy slice of cake, moist isn’t going anywhere.
