Apu Being Ditched From “The Simpsons”?

’s been over a year since “Apu” has been under fire on “The Simpsons.” Anger about racial stereotyping has grown to the point where the character hasn’t spoken a single word in the last year – even though he most recently appeared in the October 14th episode.

Last April, producer Adi Shankar put together a script writing competition to see who could come up with the best way handle the show’s “Apu Problem.” His quest – to find a script that could best “subvert him, pivot him, write him out, or evolve him in a way that takes a creation that was the byproduct of a predominately Harvard-educated white male writers’ room and transforms it into a fresh, funny and realistic portrayal of Indians in America.”

Now, Shakar believes he’s found the “perfect script.” However, he’s also heard through the grapevine that the show’s producers are contemplating ditching the character all together. He claims to have heard that news from folks directly associated with the show, but there’s been no “official” word from Fox.
