NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) _ A fundraiser in Newport has raised more than $50,000 to help pay medical bills of a local woman injured in the Boston Marathon bombing.
Organizers say more than 1,000 people turned out for Sunday's event at The Dockside nightclub to help out Heather Abbott. The event featured music from local bands, food and a raffle.
The 38-year-old Abbott had gone to watch the Red Sox play on Patriots' Day and was waiting in line to get into a crowded restaurant when the bombs went off. Doctors eventually amputated her left leg below the knee.
Among those who stopped by her hospital room after the bombing was first lady Michelle Obama.
