PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The candidates for Rhode Island governor have raised more than $12 million and spent more than $5 million in the race to replace one-term Gov. Lincoln Chafee.

The race is on track to become the most expensive gubernatorial election in state history.

Filings made this week with the state board of elections show the five major candidates raised a combined $12.4 million during the period between Jan. 1, 2011, and June 30.

Democrat Gina Raimondo has raised more than a third of that amount, bringing in $4.7 million during the cycle.

The most expensive governor's race in state history was in 2002, the year Republican Don Carcieri won over Democrat Myrth York. More than $10 million was spent.

The primary is Sept. 9, and Election Day is Nov. 4.
