WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) _ Woonsocket officials have identified a man killed in a house fire this week, while residents of the home say the victim accidentally started the blaze with a cigarette.
Authorities say 48-year-old James Ferrio died in a fire at a multifamily home on Dulude Avenue early Wednesday morning. Friends say he worked in construction and trash hauling. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
Roland Desjarlais says he and Ferrio lived on the second floor. He says Ferrio was visiting a neighbor on the third floor and caught a chair on fire while smoking.
Desjarlais says the chair was brought to the porch and the fire appeared to be out, but somehow it reignited.
The house was heavily damaged. The American Red Cross is offering residents help with housing.
