PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island's largest newspaper is for sale.

Providence Journal owner A.H. Belo Corp. announced Wednesday that it has hired an investment bank to seek buyers for the paper, which Belo purchased in 1996.

Belo recently sold The Press-Enterprise, based in Riverside, Calif. The Dallas-based company also owns The Dallas Morning News.

CEO Jim Moroney says in a statement that with Belo's focus on Dallas, it makes sense to consider selling The Providence Journal.

Belo says it won't sell the paper if it cannot find an appropriate buyer.

The Journal reports that its employees were informed of the possible sale Wednesday. Publisher and President Howard Sutton says that while the paper's ownership may change, its mission will not.
