PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Clay Pell is beginning his campaign for governor with an appearance at the Rhode Island Convention Center.
Pell is scheduled to deliver the first speech of his campaign Tuesday morning at an event at the Rhode Island Convention Center. The rally comes after the 32-year-old Democrat formally announced his candidacy Monday.
Pell is a former White House national security staffer and Coast Guard officer. He is the grandson of the late-U.S. Sen. Claiborne Pell and is married to Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan.
He faces Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and General Treasurer Gina Raimondo in September's Democratic Primary. Cranston Mayor Allan Fung and businessman Ken Block are running as Republicans. Democratic Gov. Lincoln Chafee is not seeking a second term.
