How Long Red Wine Really Lasts After Opening

So you had a glass or two of Pinot Noir earlier this week and corked the rest for later. But days have gone by, and as much as you enjoyed that vino the other night, how’s it going to taste now? And how should you store it to keep it as fresh as possible? Here’s what you need to know.

An open bottle of red wine will last from three to five days, after it’s been opened. And you should always store it in a cool, dark place - with the cork in, of course.

"The more tannin and acidity the red wine has, the longer it tends to last after opening," explains “wine geek” Madeline Puckette. "So, a light red with very little tannin, such as Pinot Noir, won’t last open as long as a rich red like Petite Sirah."

And weather makes a difference, too. When it’s hot outside, Puckette advises storing your open reds in a wine chiller or in the fridge, rather than in a room that’s 70-degrees. She also says you can tell a red wine has gone bad if it has a musty, moldy smell, an “oddly sweet” taste, or a brownish color. That’s when you should toss the rest and open a new bottle.
