Teen Girls Invent Straws That Detect Date Rape Drugs

They’re only in high school, but three students at Gulliver Preparatory School in Miami have come up with an amazing idea - straws that can detect date rape drugs. Victoria Roca, Susana Cappello, and Carolina Baigorri invented the straws during an entrepreneurship class.

The straw “has two test strips, so if you put it into a drink, it will determine whether it’s drugged or not,” Roca explains. “If it is drugged, the strip will turn to a navy color.”

Their prototype detects the most common date rape drugs Rohypnol, also called roofies, GHB, and Ketamine, also called Special K. Now they have a patent pending for their design and hope their straws make it to bars, clubs, and restaurants to help women know what they’re drinking is safe.
