The Parts Of Your Body Most Vulnerable To Sun Exposure

A lot of people likely hit the beach this weekend and a good portion of them probably came home with odd or uneven sunburns. No matter how much we block it seems that some areas of our body always wind up a little toastier than others, and the most susceptible areas may surprise you.

Orit Markowitz, assistant professor of dermatology at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, tells the “Huffington Post,” that the head and neck are particularly vulnerable and are “where the majority of all skin cancers occur.”

He also says the hair line, lips and ears are also problematic, mostly because people forget to put sunscreen on those areas. Meanwhile, another expert says people are more likely to get too much sun exposure in every day life as opposed to when they go to the beach, since people tend to forget to sunblock during their normal day.

Dermatologist Jennifer A. Stein adds that the chest and shoulders are also dangerous areas, mostly because women tend to wear bikinis and tank tops throughout the summer exposing those areas to the sun on a daily basis.Your chest skin is similar to the skin on our face and the sun can be the cause of chest wrinkles later in life.

So, what are the best ways to protect yourself from such sun exposure? Well, obviously wearing sunscreen is a must, plus sitting in the shade will help, but Stein says the best defense against the sun is sun protective clothing. She says as an added bonus, if you wear a protective shirt and it gets wet it will keep you cool, plus you have less of your body to worry about putting sunscreen on.
